The Adventures of Billy and Wayne
Original short story by Daylilylady
Told by Katie the Cricket
I as a little black cricket, live in a wild rosebush in the backyard of some friendly southern folks. I spend my days watching two kittens and my nights making a joyful noise unto the Lord. The two kittens that I mentioned go by the names of Billy and Wayne. Billy is a little tubby and is a duller color of orange. Wayne is slimmer, softer, and a darker orange than Billy. In the evening they get real feisty. Here is the dialogue I witnessed this evening.
The sun is going down and it is late summer. The shadows of a leafy green oak tree are softly drifting over the still glossy, yet slightly worn grass.
The porch spreads out over part of the yard, having bricks, dead leaves, yard equipment, and a little trash littered under the old thing.
Billy: "I bet you can't catch me." as he scurries around.
Wayne: "Of course I can! Just watch me." as he races after him. Wayne tackles Billy but Billy keeps going. Wayne then sees something out the corner of his eye. He crouches down, getting ready to pounce.
I can just imagine Billy thinking to himself , as he is poising himself on an old brick behind Wayne," Hehehe, I'm gonna get'em now." Meanwhile Wayne is actively and enthusiastically pursuing an invisible threat disguised as a leaf. Out of nowhere Billy comes at ramming speed about to knock Wayne off his high horse. Wayne sees him coming and hurries to get out of the way. He makes it just in the knick of time. Wayne is now down behind some leaves. This time it is Billy who is making a mad dash at an evil but harmless adversary. (He doesn't see it coming.) Wham!! Role!! Ufff!! Kicking, squirming, gnawing and the Wily Wayne has done it again! On and on, back and forth, first one then the other. Can't you just hear their boyish voices laughing and having a great time. Then their mother comes down off the roof. I can just hear them begging for her to show them a cool trick.
Both of them in unison: "Pleeeeaassee show us a trick.
Billy: "Just a little one."
Wayne: "It won't take very long…"
Of course both of them tries to sneak up on her, but neither of them even succeed in startling her.
About this time the sun is getting pretty low. The shadows are darkening and I'm about to break out in song. The boys are still at their antics but not quite as vigorously as before. The time has now come to quit this little saga. Hope you got a little insight into the lives of two very playful kittens.
P.S. I am in no way implying that animals are in any way equal to humans, but it is fun to imagine what they might be thinking if they were like humans.
