"I love you" is the motto of Valentine's day. It is written everywhere mentionable and unmentionable, on everything from candied hearts to the plastic that encases them. Red, pink, white are the code colors for this particular holiday as much as red and green are for Christmas and orange and black are for Halloween. Anything frilly, lacy, delicate, or sparkly goes. Depending on the receiver of the present, sometimes it's the flashy or the subtle that gets their attention.
How fitting that this year's Valentine's day falls on a Sunday. The candied hearts and the white gloves go hand in hand as do the majority of commercialized holidays anymore. Valentine's like Christmas has become a big money maker for the free market that sell to the eager customer goods such as stuff animals and colorful flower arrangements. Why are they similar to the average modern Christian? On Sunday how many well-intentioned church-goers dress up in their best, wear their smiling church faces and hold out their hand of charity warmth? And on Valentine's how many well-meaning men search from flower shop to flower shop, or grocery store looking for something that may make his significant other smile, kiss him and tell him he's the best in the world? Why?
Do Christians believe that by wearing their best clothes they impress God?
