This is the story of how the Prosecution won a Defense case.
It all started when there were only so many "qualified" attorney judges. There was the one who did not know jack squat about Mock Trial. There was the judge of other school represented (that we beat the pulp out of) and for that reason obviously was not planning on letting us win again. Then there was the mom of another student of the opposing team's school. All three were women. The judge was not that great either, but he wasn't scoring so he didn't matter in the end.
To begin with, our team was on the defense, which was supposed to be the stronger side because there was practically no evidence that the defendant killed Anne Marcus. That and a whole slue of other reasons made the defense case much easier to prove than the prosecution side.
Just so you know the burden of proof rest solely and exclusively on the shoulders of the prosecution and if the jury is left with any reasonable doubt they cannot convict Beck Martin of cheating. In the end we left them with not one, not two, but SEVEN reasonable doubts!!! The prosecution had not carried their burden and therefore the defendant should not have been found guilty. In the end she was. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? It is because of the jury, plain and simple. After they announced that they found the defendant guilty of murder, there was a hesitation and the other team got up and cheered. It was retarded. I can say that because I wasn't on either of the participating teams in the final round.
Afterwards we had a really fun time on the bridge. I think the only thing that could have made it better was if we had won (duh!).
I am still extremely proud of my team and all of the homeschool teams involved. I think it was impressive that we brought half of the competition. That was cool.
I'm still tired from it all so I'm going to bed now.
